John begins before Bethlehem, before creation: 'In the beginning was the Word', and through him all things were made. Whatever the new year holds, 'the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.' Catholic dioceses in the United States and several other countries celebrate Epiphany today, the Sunday between January 2 and 8.
