Collect for Thanksgiving Day (1928 Prayer Book)
The collect for Thanksgiving Day from the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer, giving thanks for the harvest and the fruits of the earth.
O most merciful Father, who hast blessed the labours of the husbandman in the returns of the fruits of the earth;
We give thee humble and hearty thanks for this thy bounty;
beseeching thee to continue thy loving-kindness to us, that our land may still yield her increase, to thy glory and our comfort;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Editorial reflection
The 1928 Prayer Book keeps a Day of Thanksgiving on the first Thursday in November, "or, if any other day be appointed by the Civil Authority, then such day", so the Church's day could follow the date the civil authority set. The collect gives thanks for the harvest and asks that the land go on yielding its increase.
